When you rely on a portable air conditioner to beat the Singapore heat, the window seal is your best friend. It keeps cool air inside and hot, humid air outside. But let’s be honest: fabric seals can sometimes look a little messy.
The good news is that your window seal does not have to be an eyesore. With a few simple adjustments, you can keep your portable aircon setup neat while helping it work properly. Here are practical ways to improve the look of your window seal from both inside and outside your home.
1. Get the Right Fit and Pull It Taut
The most common reason fabric window seals look untidy is excess material hanging loose. When you install a universal fabric seal—the type with a zip in the middle and hook-and-loop tape around the frame—take your time.
Measure the window frame carefully before applying the tape. When you attach the fabric, pull it taut so there are no sagging folds. A well-fitted seal looks more intentional and helps reduce warm-air leaks back into the room. Finally, make sure the zip is pulled snugly around the exhaust hose, without gaps.
2. Fold It Away When It Is Not in Use
You do not have to look at the fabric seal all year. During a cooler spell, or whenever you are not using your portable aircon, leave the seal attached and fold the fabric neatly in on itself. This keeps the window looking cleaner from the outside.
When you remove the fabric completely, the hook-and-loop tape can usually stay on the frame. On many white HDB and condo window frames it is barely noticeable, making it easy to set up the portable aircon again when the heat returns.
3. Consider a Rigid Panel, If Your Window Allows
If you have sliding windows, a rigid plastic sliding panel may offer a cleaner, more streamlined finish than fabric. Many portable air conditioners include these kits.
However, a rigid panel only works well when it fits the window properly. Gaps allow hot air back into the room. If you choose a made-to-measure acrylic panel, measure carefully and avoid permanently altering rented windows. The panel must not interfere with window locks, hinges, or safety restrictors.
4. Put Performance Before Instagram Aesthetics
Creative DIY ideas can look good online, but a portable aircon only works properly when its hot air is directed fully outside. A setup that leaves small gaps or puts strain on a window hinge may look better in a photo but perform poorly in real life.
Prioritise a tight, secure seal and keep the exhaust hose as short and straight as practical. A slightly visible but properly sealed hose is much better than a hidden setup that leaves the room warm and humid.
